Macedonian Settlement and Welfare Office.
This was part of MCASA from 1986 to 1999, when it was staffed by a federally-funded, part time GIA welfare worker, employed by MCASA. Funding ceased in 1999, and the service no longer operates in this form or structure. It also housed the Information Bureau.
Macedonian Community Radio Program
This program continues to broadcast weekly over 2 hours (3 separate programs) in the Macedonian language from Community Radio Station 5EBI-FM (103.1FM). It remains a part of MCASA.
MCASA previously produced an hourly local TV program in the Macedonian language on Community TV station ACE-TV (Channel 31), the fore-runner of the current Channel 44. The program “Macedonian Horizon 21”, ceased in 2004.
(Note : The Macedonian radio program had its origins at Radio Station 5UV – University Radio - (now ‘Radio Adelaide’) in the mid-1970s. It was produced at that time by the Society “Makedonka”, a body separate to MCASA. “Makedonka” also organized other activities for its members, who were exclusively drawn from the Republic of Macedonia in terms of origin. It was also characterized by a pro-Yugoslav leaning, which set it apart from MCASA. However, that body ceased to function at the tail end of the 1970s, and its members joined MCASA. At the same time, the radio program was moved to the new Radio 5EBI-FM and has been produced since that time under MCASA auspices.
nb 2. There are separate Macedonian-language radio programs broadcast weekly from community station 5PBA-FM, by each of the Macedonian Community “VMRO-DPMNE”, and the Macedonian Orthodox Church Community “St.Mary, Holy Mother of God”, as well as regular nationally-broadcast programs in Macedonian on SBS Radio. SBS TV also broadcasts daily Macedonian-language news and other regular TV programs and films from the Republic of Macedonia. Various other satellite/cable/pay TV and internet-streaming services in the Macedonian language are also available. The Macedonian language itself is taught at various High Schools on the Eastern seaboard, as well as at Macquarie University in Sydney.
